The story began not with a business plan, but over a glass of bourbon. Chris Voss, best known as the FBI’s lead hostage negotiator and author of Never Split the Difference, and his collaborator found themselves bonding over their shared appreciation for the spirit. The idea sparked: What if there was a bourbon designed to celebrate sealing the deal, not just the after-party?

Negotiation, Not Bargaining

Chris Voss’s philosophy of negotiation is at the heart of The Difference. “Splitting the difference is guaranteed lose-lose,” he says—a lesson that applies as much to business as to life. For Chris, negotiation is about collaboration and creating value for everyone at the table, not about compromise for compromise’s sake.

That mindset became the foundation for the bourbon’s identity. The Difference isn’t just a clever name; it’s a challenge to the industry’s conventions and a celebration of what happens when people come together to create something remarkable.

Crafting a New Kind of Bourbon

Turning vision into reality meant assembling the right team. After a few phone calls, the founders connected with Roy Milner, a master brand builder and veteran of the beverage industry, whose roots in Kentucky’s bourbon country run deep. Roy’s decades of experience—ranging from launching breweries to working alongside legendary distillers—brought the expertise needed to craft a bourbon worthy of the name.

A trip to Bardstown, Kentucky—the bourbon capital of the world—was next, where the team set about blending their first batch. “We’re learning together as a community,” they shared. “Every person who drinks our bourbon is going to know the story of each bottle, directly from the distillers, the blenders, and from Roy, who’s our guide through this journey.”

The Magic of Rare Barrels

What truly sets The Difference apart are the barrels themselves. These aren’t just any barrels; they were part of a special project led by Jim Rutledge, the iconic master distiller at Four Roses. When the opportunity arose to acquire these rare barrels, some of the last of their kind, the team knew it was fate. “Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever,” Roy explained. “All 200 of those last barrels in the world happen to live right here at Bardstown Bourbon.”

Each barrel is unique, a product of its own moment in time, shaped by Kentucky’s seasons and the expertise of its makers. The Difference is a bourbon with a story, crafted in limited quantities and never to be repeated.

Authenticity Over Hype

In an era where celebrity-backed spirits are everywhere, The Difference stands out by being unapologetically authentic. Rather than chasing trends or relying on heritage clichés, the team is focused on transparency, innovation, and building community. “A lot of brands want to say they’re different, but when you look at the playbook, it’s the same old story,” Roy pointed out. “We want to talk about what’s next.”

That means small-batch releases, unique barrels, and experiences designed for sharing, not hoarding. When these initial 200 barrels are gone, The Difference will seek out new, equally special lots, sometimes producing as few as 100 bottles from a single barrel, each one meant to be enjoyed and remembered by a tight-knit group.

As Chris Voss puts it: “Bourbon is meant to be enjoyed.
